Movie Synopsis
Lionel Worthing, a music prodigy from an impoverished Kentucky farming family, possesses the unique ability to visualize sound. Although he was orphaned during his childhood, David Smith experienced a more fortunate upbringing while being cared for by an uncle in Newport. Both attending a music conservatory in New England, they encounter each other for the first time in 1917 at a pub. Their mutual passion for folk music is what first unites them, leading to a bond that ultimately becomes romantic and sexual. Though the Great War keeps them apart, they reunite after the war when David, employed as a researcher at a college in Augusta, ME, invites Lionel, who has spent the intervening years at the family farm, to join him on a months-long project to gather folk songs across rural New England. The inquiry shifts to what will occur in their relationship once the project ends, as they have only shared what each has decided to reveal to the other during their brief time together about the other’s aspirations and desires. Though both might contend that working on this project is the happiest they’ve ever felt, Lionel reflects on a typical family life with a partner and kids, while David harbors his own more concealed struggles beyond their shared moments.
